A Vedic Birth Chart (Janma Kundali or Janam Patrika) is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment of your birth. It maps the positions of all nine planets (Navagrahas) across the 12 houses (Bhavas) of the zodiac, as seen from your birth location.
The Lagna (Ascendant)
The Lagna is the most important point in your chart - the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It determines the entire house structure and is the foundation of all chart interpretations.
The 12 Houses (Bhavas)
The 12 houses govern different areas of life: self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, marriage, longevity, fortune, career, gains, and liberation. Planet placements in each house indicate their influence on those life areas.
Nakshatras (Lunar Mansions)
The 27 Nakshatras divide the zodiac into 13°20' segments. Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet, deity, and nature. Your Moon Nakshatra (Janma Nakshatra) is especially significant and forms the basis of the Vimshottari Dasha system.
Vimshottari Dasha
This 120-year planetary period system begins from your Moon Nakshatra. Each planet rules a major period (Mahadasha): Ketu 6yr, Venus 20yr, Sun 6yr, Moon 10yr, Mars 7yr, Rahu 18yr, Jupiter 16yr, Saturn 19yr, Mercury 17yr.
How to Read Your Vedic Birth Chart - Step by Step
Start with Your Lagna
The rising sign is House 1 - the reference point for all house readings. Every house, planet, and aspect is calculated from the Lagna degree. Your Lagna sign colours your entire chart interpretation.
Check Planet Placements
Each planet occupies a rashi (sign) and a bhava (house). The rashi shows HOW the planet expresses its energy; the house shows WHICH life area it governs. A planet in its own or exalted sign is strong.
Assess Planetary Dignity
Exaltation (uchcha) = strongest; own sign (swakshetra) = very strong; friendly sign = supportive; neutral = average; enemy sign = weak; debilitation (neecha) = weakest. Debilitated planets can be cancelled by Neecha Bhanga.
Check Aspects (Drishti)
All planets aspect the house 7th from themselves. Special aspects: Mars additionally aspects 4th & 8th; Jupiter aspects 5th & 9th; Saturn aspects 3rd & 10th. Rahu/Ketu aspect 5th & 9th from themselves.
Identify Yogas
Raj Yoga (kendra + trikona lords combined) = authority and success. Dhana Yoga (2nd, 5th, 9th, 11th lords combined) = wealth. Gaja Kesari (Jupiter in kendra from Moon) = wisdom and fame.
Time Events with Dasha
The Vimshottari Dasha (planetary period) activates certain planets and houses. Events materialise when the Dasha lord is also triggered by transiting planets - especially Saturn and Jupiter.

Important Planetary Yogas in Your Birth Chart
A yoga is a specific planetary combination that creates a notable life theme. Hundreds of yogas are described in classical Vedic texts. Here are the six most impactful ones to look for first:
Raj Yoga
Lords of kendra (1,4,7,10) and trikona (5,9) houses conjoined, exchanged, or in mutual aspect. Grants authority, fame, and worldly success. The greater the involvement of 9th and 10th lords, the stronger the yoga.
Gaja Kesari Yoga
Jupiter in a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) from the Moon's position. One of the most auspicious yogas - grants intelligence, fame, and respected social standing. Found in many great leaders' charts.
Dhana Yoga
Lords of 2nd, 5th, 9th, and 11th houses connected to each other or to their houses. Produces substantial wealth accumulation throughout life. Multiple Dhana yogas compound the effect.
Viparita Raja Yoga
Lords of the dusthana (6th, 8th, 12th) houses placed in each other's houses. Counterintuitively auspicious - success comes through transforming adversity, apparent losses lead to greater gains.
Pancha Mahapurusha
Mars/Mercury/Jupiter/Venus/Saturn in exaltation or own sign AND placed in a kendra house. Creates a person of extraordinary ability in that planet's domain - e.g., Jupiter's version (Hamsa Yoga) grants wisdom and moral authority.
Budha-Aditya Yoga
Sun and Mercury conjunct within 15° (excluding exact combustion at 0°-3°). Grants sharp intellect, excellent communication skills, government favour, and success in fields requiring analytical thinking.
Frequently Asked Questions About Vedic Birth Charts
What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology birth charts?
Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac - aligned to the actual star positions - while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac aligned to seasons. The difference is roughly 23-24° (the ayanamsa). This means your Vedic rashi (Moon sign, Sun sign) often differs from your Western zodiac sign. Vedic astrology also places greater emphasis on the Moon sign and Lagna over the Sun sign.
Why is exact birth time so important for a Kundali?
The Lagna (Ascendant) changes approximately every 2 hours. An incorrect birth time can shift the Lagna to a different rashi, fundamentally altering the house structure and all house-based interpretations. The Moon can also shift nakshatras within a day, affecting the Dasha period. For reliable results, use your birth certificate time if possible.
What is Lahiri ayanamsa used in this calculator?
Ayanamsa is the angular difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa is the official standard adopted by the Government of India for almanacs and is the most widely used in Jyotish. As of 2025, it is approximately 24°. This calculator uses the Lahiri formula.
What does retrograde (R) mean for a planet?
A retrograde planet appears to move backward relative to Earth. In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets (known as Vakri grahas) are considered to have intensified or internalized energy. They revisit themes of the house they occupy and the houses they rule. Retrograde benefics (Jupiter, Venus) can give strong results; retrograde malefics may intensify challenges.
What are Rahu and Ketu in Vedic astrology?
Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node) are the lunar nodes - points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. They are shadow planets (Chhaya Grahas) that always remain exactly 180° apart. In Vedic astrology, they represent karmic axis: Rahu signifies worldly desire and future karma, while Ketu represents past karma, liberation, and spirituality. They are always retrograde.
What is the difference between the Lagna chart and the Navamsa (D9) chart?
The Lagna (D1) birth chart shows your outer life - personality, career, events, and circumstances. The Navamsa (D9) chart shows your inner character, marriage potential, and spiritual path. Professional Jyotishis always analyse both together. A planet strong in D1 but weak in D9 may underdeliver; a planet weak in D1 but in the same sign in D9 (Vargottama) often exceeds expectations.
What are Kendra and Trikona houses?
Kendra houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are angular pillars of the chart associated with stability, home, relationships, and career. Trikona houses (1, 5, 9) are the most auspicious, associated with dharma, creativity, and fortune. The 1st house is both kendra and trikona - making it the most powerful. When lords of kendra and trikona combine, they form Raj Yogas.
How does Vimshottari Dasha timing work?
Each of the 27 nakshatras has a planetary ruler. Your Moon's nakshatra at birth determines which planetary period (Mahadasha) you begin with and how much of it remained at birth. The total Dasha cycle spans 120 years: Ketu 6, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 years. Each Mahadasha is subdivided into Antardashas (sub-periods) of all 9 planets in proportion.
